1. 研究目的与意义
Cross-cultural interpretation is a significant way to convey Chinese traditional culture to the world. With an increasing development of foreign exchanges between domestic and foreign cultures, more and more TV dramas are introduced into abroad. TV drama translation, as a new translation type, has emerged in the past few decades. However, the source language cannot be understood by most Chinese or foreigners, and languages become the main obstacle to enjoy Cross-cultural TV dramas. How to translate TV dramas#8217; line words, which contain both popular and traditional Chinese culture and beauty of Chinese. A good interpreter can lead a country to know the other countries#8217; culture. The process of translation, however, is not the literal conversation, but reflects the different characters of culture. If we cannot convey the true meaning, it will lead to misunderstanding or cultural conflict. The ability of translating is considered as one of the required foreign language skills in China. When we start learning English in primary school, the first thing we must do is learning how to read it and understanding its meaning. Only in this way can we understand the simple passage. Furthermore, when we approach English deeply, we can find there are a lot of complex clauses and proverbs in the articles and it is difficult for us to analyze the true meaning
2. 研究内容和预期目标
Since Empresses in the Palace has been aired, the directly designed dialogues have gained a large popularity. From this TV drama I will study the actor or actress#8217;s line words to analysis the differences in culture, and point out that we should pay a lot of attention to the translation of functional equivalence. Last, I will summarize some useful methods to better direct translation on film or TV drama line words. Language and culture are inextricably bound with each other. Culture is the basic of language, and language is the carrier of culture. So, if we can understand the culture of another country, it is helpful for us to convey its central meaning into our mother tongue. Now, I will introduce some influences on translation from the following aspects and help interpreters improve their cross-cultural awareness and do the translational work better. For example, this TV play series plays an important role in Chinese costume pieces. In order to exchange the culture between China and America, the authority introduces this drama into American TV market. Before it screened, many Chinese net friends were concerned with whether its actor#8217;s lines could be translated well or not. However, when Chinese audiences watch this drama which translated into American language, they can do nothing but laugh bitterly. I researched many materials, and the most important reason, I consider, is the cultural difference. The setting of this drama is Qing Dynasty and there are lots of ancient Chinese. From the translated actor#8217;s lines, we can see these interpreters do not understand Chinese culture well. There is no doubt that the American audiences cannot understand the central meaning and they are confused what they are saying. #8220;一仗红(a way to punish people)#8221; was translated into #8220;the scarlet red(罪孽深重的红)#8221;; #8220;惊鸿舞(dance name)#8221; becomes #8220;Flying Wild Goose(飞翔的野鹅)#8221;. From this example, we can see this kind of barriers in translation is fatal, so when we do translation work, we must learn its culture firstly. Solutions: After the discussion about the different barriers or gaps in Chinese-English or English-Chines translation, we can figure out some strategies for solving these problems based on some theories. Speaking of translation theories, I tend to think of professor Alexander Farser Tytler who laid down three fundamentals by which a translation should be made or judged. Translators should give a complete transcription of the ideas of the original work. The style and manner of writing should be of the same character as that of the original, and a translation should have all the ease of original compositions. To some extent, translation is a kind of method to exchange different culture concerning different countries. Language and culture interact each other, so language plays an important role in culture. Certainly, the work of translation is not an easy job. There is no doubt that the interpreters could meet with different barriers in the process of translation. A good interpreter not only knows the homeland#8217;s culture and how to express them well, but also should know the other country#8217;s native culture and deep meaning. When a translator translates English into Chinese, he or she should know faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance are the basic principles in translation. 1. We cannot translate words literally. 2. Use the principle of #8220;Faithfulness, Expressiveness, Elegance#8221; 3. language should be vividly and translated words should easily understand by the masses
3. 国内外研究现状
There are many papers about this TV drama, but the deeply study of TV drama or film translation is late and the groups of scholars are too small. A large number of TV dramas are introduced into the market, so it is obvious that the importance of translation in TV dramas or film is penetrating into our lives and it pushes the development of the films and television programs. However, the study of this field is ignored in China. From the dates in CNKI, we can observe that the number of papers about this study is 442 during 1995 to 2000, just occupied 1% in the study of translation. Some are published in film magazines. From this point, we can know the close relationship in the study of films and television and the translation in films and televisions. Especially, some authors focus on the differences on culture when interpreters translate this TV drama#8217;s line words and analysis some specific examples that cannot translate correctly, and the foreigners have difficulty understanding its real meaning, so there is no doubt that the Chinese culture cannot attract the foreigners to the uttermost and filed of translation in films and television cannot spread widely.
