1. 研究目的与意义
The Great Gatsby is one of my favorite novels. Not only Gatsby#8217;s love for Daisy that attracts me, but the writer#8217;s writing skills. Through the whole story, the application of symbolism can be seen everywhere. The East egg and West egg, the valley of ashes, the Eyes of T.J.Eckleburg are the highlights of the use of symbolism which helps deepen the theme and analyze the characters. Superficially, this work tells a love story between Gatsby and Daisy. But the story took place in the 20th century and near Changdao Island of New York. In fact, it is a reflection of America in the 20th century. From the beginning till the end, F. Scott Fitzgerald depicts the process of the illusion the Gatsby#8217;s dream, that is, reaching out his dream, losing his dream and despair of his dream. The story is very simple, the profound meaning of the story is the intention that the author want to demonstrate. The perfect application of symbolism shown the theme of this work. Fitzgerald uses various objects, colors and figures to symbolize the illusion of American dream. To put it simple, the Gatsby#8217;s dream is love and money which symbolize the American dream in Fitzgerald heart. It is a pity that his life ruined along with the American dream.

As the novel the Great Gatsby wins the world fame, the researches on Fitsgerald and this representative novel by scholars at home and broad has achieved many basic and acknowledged agreements. Many papers and dissertations are relevant to the moral topic-the illusion of the American dream which is the main theme of the novel. Scholars have observed the writing skills such as the application of symbolism.
Sang Xiao Li conducts general studies on the symbolic meaning of colors and objects. She argues that the writer deliberately chose some symbolic colors and objects to deepen the theme.
Wan Lian Zeng analyzes explicitly the symbolic meaning of two colors-green and grey with the understanding of the American culture. He stresses the importance of the application of symbolism which plays an important role in the development of the plot.
