TheFifth Child is one of Lessing#8217;s challenging novels which is published in 1988. However, once it has been published, it has achieved a great reputation. In the world, there are many scholars are analyzing this fiction.

Some writers have studied different themes in this fiction. Pickering states that although Lessing has written many novels, there are still some connections among those works, and she has never given up contributing to the civilization of morality and ethics. Professor Cai expresses her own understanding of the feminism in this fiction, and believes that the woman should break through the limitation to recreate a new social image.

Furthermore, many scholars and critics have also studied some possible special meaning in this novel. Pifer puts forward that both human being and nature have the evil side. In this fiction, the chilling depiction of a monstrous child exposes the darkness of both nature and human being. And the character, Ben, is the nature#8217;s dark side. However, Dean sets forth the special meaning of number #8220;five#8221; and mentions the numerology to analyze the relation with Ben.
